'OctArm' Soft Robot Manipulators

Through an interagency cooperative agreement with Clemson University, ARDI has access to emerging world class robotics technology. Clemson has featured a leading robotics program for over 20 years. The program has attracted some of the most prominent researchers in the field, such as John Luh, Yuan Zhang, and Ian Walker. Areas of expertise include sensing and control, and hardware design and modeling. The program is particularly noted for its focus on hardware demonstration of its new theoretical research. The laboratory environment for robotics research is first class, with the experimental facilities being continually updated.

Under the leadership of Pricipal Investigator John Luh, Clemson recently led a multidisciplinary $3.8 million DARPA/DSO Biodynotics effort in soft robot manipulators. Clemson is the world leader in this area. The DARPA effort successfully developed and demonstrated soft “OctArm” robot manipulators (inspired by octopus arms).
